When the homeowners first approached the design team, their brief was clear—they wanted to refresh their 4-room HDB flat, which had been their home for the past five years. The biggest challenge? A bulky cupboard that dominated the entranceway, eating into precious space and disrupting the flow of the home. Adding to the complexity, one of the homeowners is an avid cycling enthusiast, with not one but two cherished bicycles that hold both personal and aesthetic value.

These prized possessions weren’t just hobby gear—they were a reflection of passion and a growing collection that the couple took pride in. And so, they deserved more than just a storage spot; they needed a space designed to showcase them with intention. The designer embraced the challenge with thoughtful precision. The oversized cupboard was removed and replaced with a sleek, custom-built cabinet that elegantly frames the household shelter. A secondary door was introduced, cleverly integrated into a shoe cabinet—its design so seamless, it vanishes into the background. A slim niche was added to this “invisible” door, offering both a display ledge and a clever way to conceal everyday clutter behind refined lines.

But the heart of the redesign lies in the bicycles themselves. Recognising their significance, the designer carved out a dedicated nook, complete with structural reinforcement to support the weight of the display. The bicycles are presented at a striking 90-degree angle, allowing them to be admired from multiple perspectives. Mini spotlights with narrow beam angles highlight each piece like a gallery exhibit, transforming them into sculptural centerpieces within the home. The vertical arrangement, anchored in the middle of the common area, elevates this HDB flat beyond the ordinary—turning a functional necessity into a bold design statement.
